Very pumped to head back to this years second annual Free Range Music Festival taking place in Belfast, Maine on Saturday April 30th. Last years festival was super cool. This year will be sure to rock again.

The whole festival has got a really laid back vibe and lot’s lot’s of really good music. All kinds of little cafes, bars and theaters host bands throughout the day and night. You can just bounce around and check whoever you want out. <a href="http://hillytown.com/" target=_blank">Hillytown, a music blog about indie rock in Maine, released a 2011 Free Range Music Sampler. You can listen to it below.

There are going to be some killer performances this year. The classic Michael Hurley will be there. That alone is reason enough to not miss it. I featured two of his songs in my recent podcast featuring “Hot Day at the Zoo.” But, I think I am most excited about the Rattlesnakes from Portland, Maine. These guys sound really good and I am looking foreword to catching them live. Here are some tunes by the Rattlesnakes.

In case you are not on the Phish radar, or someone did not inform you or you have just been too busy to care or whatever the case may be, I am shedding a little light on the recent free download Mike Gordon and his band released. The Free Mike Gordon download features a show played in Minneapolis from their fall tour in 2010. The whole show is pretty good, but the Funky Bitch is bitchin… It has more of a wahish, open airy feeling to the lead guitar riffs and overall a bit more jazzed up then then the version Phish has been busting out for over two decades. Have a listen.

Dead Sessions features an all-star cast of talented musicians from northern Vermont. They all get together now and again and have some fun with the exploratory sounds of the legendary Grateful Dead.

Akin to archeologists poking around a blank canvas to reinvent what was once alive, Dead Session members unearth the vibrant side of classic cuts by the Grateful Dead. Their setlists are epic and their live performances are absolutely rocking.

You can catch em’ here and there around Vermont. They have a show coming up at Higher Ground in Burlington in a couple weeks. Here is a killer show they played at Higher Ground just over a year ago.
<param value="true"

When I think of a hot day at the zoo, I envision flies swarming around piles of polar bear pooh, chocolate ice cream streams flowing down crying kids faces, strings of pink bubblegum oozing off the grimy bottoms of my shoes and an overall feeling of wanting to leave nearly as much as all the poor animals locked up around me. Actually, I also think of peanuts too. Which is weird because I think that is just due to the presence of peanuts in a lot of kid’s books about zoos. Truthfully, I have not been to a zoo in a really long time, and I think that has quite a bit to do with the fact that I don’t really believe any living thing should be locked up in a cage and gawked at…

These days, when I think of a steaming afternoon at the ol’ zoo, I also think of the New England based progressive bluegrass, rock and roll quartet Hot Day at the Zoo. The popular string band brings thoughtful songwriting to the table and sets it neatly with a pioneering technical sound that brings together new and old Americana.

Hot Day at the Zoo has released three rock-solid albums, including their latest, Zoograss, which was released in January, 2010.
It’s good to see Spiritual Rez is kicking it right now in 2010. The world may be as disconnected as it ever was. Newspapers are full of news about dropping stock prices, foreclosure, war and budget crisis. Where is the happieness?

Reggae has always kind of stepped in to be the driving force behind making sense of a world gone mad. I dig this about reggae. I appreciate this about the artists who create this wonderful feel good music that delivers a message that everything is going to be alright.

But, you know what has always killed me about reggae? Please, Don’t get me wrong. I definitely dig it. But, I have always been a huge sucker for big time riff changes, cosmic guitar changes and plain ol’ changing up the tempo and beat quite a bit, if not a whole, whole lot. I am sort of Pixies, Frank Black and the Catholics kind of guy. However, I hold a special little place in my heart for reggae and its wholesome, fresh goodness.

Spiritual Rez delivers a diversity of sound and groove that so many bands ska/reggae/funk bands lack. Big, beautiful beats surrounded by cruising lyrics, sky-high horn ballads, driving guitar and all that other sweet stuff satisfy the mind.

It’s nice to have a band like Spiritual Rez on the scene. Rock it steady and keep the masses heady. Check them out online at their website and go see em’ live.

New England rocks and Soundcentury knows this good. Hell, that is why I put this damn thing together in the first place and why I am sitting here right now on a perfectly fine, windy, fall day in northern Maine writing about some reggae band from Boston.</itunes:summary>
