When you are traveling down an interstate going 70 mph, with two surfboards on your roof, and a bike hanging off your trunk, you are generally thinking about two things. The first thing is how long it is going to take you to get to where you are going and the second is how cool it going to be to ride your boards and peddle your bike.

It is not until you look into your rearview mirror to witness your freshly tuned mountain bike floundering around on the hard pavement that you begin to seriously consider a third thing. Motherfu…..!!! and a couple more harsh ol’ words. My bike is screwed.

My bike took a hard tumble for sure, but lucky for me, no vehicles behind me to ground it up into further bike mince-metal. I just collected it on up, threw it on the back of the car again, much more secured of course, and was happy that my boards were all nice and secure. Thankfully, the waves were sweet and the water was pretty warm for Maine.

So, after a long day of riding waves, I popped into Roses, our local bike shop here in Orono, Maine, and had them do a little damage assessment. Pretty much all you can do. Well, just afterwards, I ran into Anthony Ambrosino from the local band Mudseason and he was all smiles.

You see, Mudseason has been booked at the Nateva Festival taking place in Maine this July 4th weekend. Mudseason has been rocking central Maine for quite some time now, laying down a beautiful blend of jam-folky-funk-rock to a growing base of fans.

They are extremely excited about playing Nateva Festival on Sunday, and will have some special guest musicians joining them onstage, including Les Rhoda on the Sax. Check them out on this Soundcentury podcast and if you dig what you hear, keep an eye out for this band who have absolutely no plans on staying at home. Go see em’ live.

Soulful, well-crafted lyrics are not easy to come by. Lyrics, which are both timeless and universal, are as beautiful as mist on an early summer morning and as rare as a rainbow in winter. Singer/songwriter and accomplished guitarist Jeremy Harple is a musician who knows how to write a song.

The Vermont singer-songwriter has written more than 300 original songs over the years and has played countless shows throughout the many music venues in New England.

Harple takes his lyrics and seamlessly blends them with witty, creative guitar playing. Countless audiences have witnessed Harple pick beautiful tight lines around the banjo or guitar, while laying down blues on the harmonica.

Kick back, relax and have a good listen to this talented musician from Vermont. His songs may only be known to small pockets of fans at the present time, but lyrics like these carry messages that will soon be heard far and wide.

Check him out on the fourth of July at Johnny Fest in Alburgh, Vermont.
MMoss is like a long lost 1960’s musical experiment that was left in an old dusty suitcase in the back corner of a dark basement. The latches on that old suitcase are pried open and handled with care and love by the Dover, New Hampshire based band.

Swirling, earthy psychedelia is unpacked out of this suitcase very carefully, making sure that each note is emphasized at just the right moment. This is the kind of music that makes you want to close your eyes and dream and just get lost. It will take you for a ride wherever you want to ride. Just let go.

But, what is that colorful looking shiny thing on that suitcase? It’s a sticker. It says, “fuck-off…were not a 1960’s throwback band!” And, they are not indeed.

MMoss has got their own groove going and unlike lot’s of 1960’s garage band short numbers full of fuzzy, dark droned out sobs, these guys from the White Mountains of New Hampshire infuse tight, bright elements of folk, jazz and blues into their songs.

Oh yeah…and it’s 2010 and these cats are playing right now. In fact, they just recorded this album over the last couple months. Take a listen, you won’t believe that this just came out. Exciting, exploratory rock and roll has returned with MMoss.

Visit the MMOSS website, check out some upcoming shows in May and buy their album for what you believe it is worth right here.

“I’ve always loved music. The radio was on a lot when I was a kid growing up, and there have always been songs and rhythms in my head,” writes singer, songwriter, rhythm guitar player, and founding member of the Boondock Blues Band, Shawn Mercer.

Shawn Mercer and the Boondock Blues Band hail from Orland, Maine where a rotating selection of locally talented bands members step in to create an original blend of bluesy, country rock. They have had the privilege of opening for a number of talented bands such as Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, James McMurty & the Heartless Bastards, Sarah Borges & the Broken Singles and Shemekia Copeland.

Thoughtful, creative lyrics accompany a roots, alt-country twang creating a country picture full of long winding dusty back roads with a sunset splintering through bare, wind blown trees. Perhaps, a cold beer in hand, as the last of the days winds crackle.

Shawn Mercer will be celebrating the release of his second album, Reflections on April 8th at the Alamo Theatre in Bucksport, Maine. This should prove to be a fantastic evening of music. If you cannot make this show, make sure to make it down to the Free Range Music Festival in Belfast on April 24, to see him perform.

They say that when you die, your soul sometimes sticks around. It haunts the very earth it once lived. Invisible, but wanting to be heard, a soul wanders and roams looking for what it never found.

But, you also have souls that are perfectly at home right now, in this world and in this time. They are the souls that are not waiting.

The Toughcats, a three-piece rock and roll outfit from the Fox Islands in Penobscot Bay, Maine have found their voice in this time and in this era we call the 21’st century.

Forget the fancy rock and roll gizmos. Leave em’ at the door. Pedals, shmedals. Synthesizer, lamenizer. The Toughcats scoop up a sweet, rootsy, backyard barefootin’ lazy ol’ summertime barrel of goodness that’s gonna make the old timers say…shit, that music still in style.

The Toughcats call Maine home, but they leave all the time to get their sound out to there. With just a drummer and a couple string players, the Toughcats create a rich sound that screams punk rock, but sails alternative country.

When you play intimately with cats like Kathy Mattea, Hot Buttered Rum, Deerhoof and Sam Bush; you must be doing something right. The Toughcats are onto something good and groovy.

Check em’ out on the Toughcats website and find out where they are playing next. Make sure to check out their videos too. Buy their albums in local record shops in Maine like Bull Moose Records, Wild Rufus Records and Five Elements Gallery. If you want to buy their album online, you can do that to. Toughcats Albums Online.
